Another app pulled from the iPhone App Store, this time it’s Pixelpipe

After over a year in the iPhone App Store and a half dozen separate approved submissions, Apple has unfortunately decided to remove our application from the store. While I admit we were cutting some corners to provide functionality outside the API we were not using any private APIs & just being creative with-in the bounds of the of the public media directory.

What were we doing wrong? Simply scanning the contents of the DCIM directory to create a list of the photos & video. This provided our users with the capability to quickly multi-select any media from their photo gallery for upload instead of the one at a time functionality provided with-in the official API.

What makes this most unfortunate though is the fact it was another developer that complained about the functionality we were providing outside the official API, Apple was forced to react to the complaint & remove our application.

In Apple’s defense I have to say they did provide us with a week to update our application before removal from the store. Unfortunately the requested changes were so extensive that we were not able to complete the work in the time allowed. We have an update in the works & will be resubmitting next week for approval. Apple has offered to expedite the testing which was cool as well.

While we’re huge Apple fans at Pixelpipe I have to say the restrictions put on developers is a real concern. If developers are able to innovate & provide a better user experience with-in the bounds of an official OS release without harming the user then what’s the problem?

After working in mobile for over a decade, I have to credit Apple for “changing everything” & allow developers a real opportunity to distribute apps outside of the carriers garden. I only hope they will learn by Nokia & Google’s example and allow developers to innovate to provide a better user experience without having to hack or jailbreak the OS.

This is simply a notification to our users why they will not be able to find Pixelpipe in the iPhone store for the time being. We’ll look forward to announcing our return soon enough & bringing some additional features to our iPhone user base with our next release.

Update: We’re back in the iPhone App Store as Pixelpipe HD & better then ever! We now support background uploads & HD video uploads directly from the iPhone.

Pixelpipe is now bringing multimedia to your Foursquare check-ins

We’ve released support for Foursquare as a Pixelpipe destination today! You can now shout out to your followers from any Pixelpipe application with a shortened pi.pe link back to a photo, video or audio file included in the post. These shouts can be combined with any other service we offer as a destination. Posting a sound clip to audioboo & foursquare at the same time to share a clip recorded at the SXSW show you’re watching would be an example of how you might combine services.

Better yet for Android users we’re now allowing you to check-in to Foursquare venues directly from our application at the time of upload. Just use the “Share to” feature & select Foursquare as the venue, we’ll automatically pull up a list of venues in the area. It’s no problem if your venue isn’t found, just use the handy search list to expand the list of choices in the area. This feature is available now in Pixelpipe 2.0.3 and above for Android, and coming soon to other supported mobile platforms.

While we’re big fans of Foursquare here at Pixelpipe we’ve always thought the text only experience was a bit limiting. We’re excited to help you to share your experiences with your followers with links to media and direct check-ins from Android. Now it’s your turn, let’s see what you create.

Here’s an overview of the new features:

- Check-in to a Foursquare venue with linked media (text, photo, video, audio or a file) with Pixelpipe 2.03 or above for Android.
- Shout out to your foursquare friends with text & media from any Pixelpipe application
- Automatic foursquare:venue_id machine tags to Flickr when checking in to foursquare and uploading to Flickr (Android only)
- Check-in directly after capture with Share to feature from the built-in camera application (Android only).

To kick things off we’re offering Pixelpipe Pro for Android free of charge for direct download. Just visit http://tr.im/pixelpipe from your Android Phone to install the latest and start uploading photos, video & audio to over 100 services including Foursquare.

For our iPhone, Palm Pre & Nokia users you’ll still be able to shout out to their friends with media however you will not be able to check-in at this time. This functionality is similar to a few other apps that are offering photo links in shouts however expands the functionality to support video, audio & even files in the post.

Enjoy!

New Features: Time based grouping of media for Twitter posts, inline geo-location & previous upload stream!

Have you ever wanted to say more on Twitter then a 140 characters or a few lines of text and a photo? We’ve introduced a new feature that will automatically group media from your Twitter uploads into one post based on a specified amount of time including your geo-location. The best thing about this feature is that it happens automatically, you just specify the amount time from 2min to a full day and we’ll hold your uploads and send just one shortened pi.pe link to Twitter.

Each Pixelpipe pi.pe page can contain a combination of photos, video, audio & even files, the contents of the uploads are posted with the oldest at the top so your viewers can see your story in the order you posted. A good example of usage would be a vacation where you’re posting photos & videos with a 24 hour delay for grouping before we post a single Tweet to your followers. A more typical example would be a few posts with our default 5 min delay as you’ll find in this example from my lunch at Bento415 yesterday http://pi.pe/-wtj94p.

Here’s an example of a pi.pe page demonstrating the media uploaded, geo-location and our new previous uploads stream view (on the right). One item to note is that the previous uploads view is specific to this Pixelpipe service and will only contain media you’ve uploaded to this specific Twitter Pipe. What this means is that your family pictures uploaded to Kodak for example will not be viewable in this stream, only the pictures you’ve previously uploaded to this Twitter Pipe.

Introducing Atom 1.0 publishing for Nokia Share Online

We’re rolling out support for Atom 1.0 publish protocol for Nokia Share Online users and wanted to invite you all to test out the integration in advance. While there are some advantages to 1.0 like 25% faster uploads & photo feeds (coming soon) it’s not without a cost since Nokia decided not to support Titles in the Share Online client. You can however still send photos, video, audio and files with a caption & tags however just without a title.

If you feel you must have titles with your uploads you can stick with our existing Atom 0.3 (Lifeblog) integration. If you have a need for speed and can do without the titles here’s a set of quick instructions to getting the new Atom 1.0 plug-in installed and configured.

1. Download the plug-in from http://tr.im/DXfO directly to your Nokia or to your desktop and transfer to your phone.

2. Open the Pixelpipe configuration from your phone’s Inbox to install to Share Online

3. Now open the Share Online application on your phone and select Pixelpipe

4. Select Yes if you have a Pixelpipe account otherwise choose No and create an account and return

5. Now it’s time to enter your account details to authenticate and link the plug-in to your PP account. For the Name you’ll use the email address associated with your account, the Password however is not your normal password and is unique application key that you can find at the bottom of this page http://m.pixelpipe.com/settings. We use the App Key instead of a password since the encryption utilized by Atom isn’t very strong and we want to protect your privacy, we’re not trying to be difficult ;) .

6. Your plug-in will now be updated to use our Atom 1.0 endoint for uploads and will automatically start displaying photo feeds as soon as they’re available.

Let us know if you experience any issues while testing the new features Atom 1.0 features at beta@pixelpipe.com.

Pixelpipe wins Web Guild’s Startup Idol 2009

The competition was fierce however I’m pleased to announce that Pixelpipe has come out victorious in Web Guild’s first annual Startup Idol event. While I know our service and demo were good enough for the win I have to give it to James J and his freestyle rap that oh so accurately described our services to put us over the top. Checkout the lyrics below.

startup_idol

To the tune of of Eric B & Rakim – Paid in Full

Thinkin’ of a master plan

Got a next gen smart phone in my hand

So I dig into my pocket, all my bandwidth spent

Installin’ Pixelpipe for just ninety nine cents

So I start my mission to get my photos sent

Without a lot of time or dead presidents

I need pics, in my twitter stream

Maybe customized with a landing page theme

I used to upload, again and again

With a timeout failure nine times in ten

But now I learned to pipe cos I’m righteous

I feel great, so maybe I might just

Share some videos too

3-G-high-rez flowin’ to my YouTube

Walkin’ up the street, talkin’ on Skype

With my Nokia phone running Pixelpipe

Now’s the test to see if I got pull

Win startup idol, and I’m paid in full
