Publishing video directly from the iPhone 3G S and Pixelpipe 1.4.1

June 19, 2009 · 22 Comments

We’ve added support for video uploads directly from the iPhone 3G S today with our release of Pixelpipe 1.4.1 to the iPhone App Store. While we’re 90% awesome and allow for publishing directly from the 3G S to over 40 services (Apple only supports two) there is one small issue in that we don’t display the thumbnail for the video. The preview however is displayed just above the video with the same name so it’s easy to determine which video you are about to upload.

While we’re sorry about the small inconvenience it really couldn’t be helped since we didn’t have access to the 3G S until this morning and were able to test our software for the first time. We now know how to access the thumbnails and will be submitting a fix to Apple this evening, hopefully we can get it through testing and out to you all very soon!

And now for the awesomeness with our 1.4.1 release:

- We’ve increased our maximum size per item to 200MB, you can now upload long videos without the danger of running out of memory directly from the iPhone.

- Multi-Select: Send multiple photos & video at the same time. Just select the media by clicking on the name or pre-view to add them to the queue, press the blue arrow to the right to set Titile, Caption and Tags for each item.

- Routing Tags: Overrride your default destinations by use of our routings tags feature to send to specific services or groups of destinations. Just include @service_name or create groups by associating multiple services with the same tag. eg.@twitter, @facebook, @friends. More info at http://tr.im/p0ZR.

- Publish video directly from the phone to over 40 services, Apple provides upload to mobile.me and YouTube however we include Facebook, Twitter, 12Seconds.tv. Flickr, blip.tv, Vimeo, Photobucket and a bunch more.

Video upload support for the following: Acrobat.com, blip.tv, box.net, Buzznet, Dailymotion, Dropshots, drop.io, Email, Facebook, Flickr, FotoTime, Friendfeed, FTP, Hyves.net, identi.ca*, imeem, ipernity, Jaiku*, Kewego, Kodak Gallery, kwippy*, Kyte.tv, Moby Pictures, mobile.me, Nokia Ovi, Phanfare, Photobucket, Picasa, Ping.fm*, Plerb*, Plurk*, Radar, Revver, Seesmic, Smugmug, TinyPic, Twitter*, Tumblr, Viddler, vimeo, Vox, YouAre, YouTube.

Hey! Great job with the app! I’m having a few problems, like publishing my videos to blogger.. are you guys having any problems with that?

    Hi there,
So… is there a delay in routing it to Facebook? I uploaded a video about 5 hours ago and, though I can see it on Pixelpipe, it hasn’t been sent to my authorized Facebook account. Pixelpipe states “Processed for 1 destination.”

I suppose that I was under the impression that once authorized, Pixelpipe would distribute it automatically. Is it just taking long or is there another step?

    Thanks!

We publish almost instantly to the destinations. Facebook requires a number of permissions that you may not have set, you’ll need to allow for video uploads and publishing directly to your wall to get your videos published without manual approval. You can check your settings under My Pipes after logging in to Pixelpipe.

Looks like my Settings were correct, since I didn’t change anything at all… and the video just appeared.

Perhaps there’s just a delay today? Thanks.

Just to clarify… my video appeared almost instantly on Pixelpipe, but took about 6 hours to be distributed to Facebook.

I hadn’t changed any settings whatsoever, so it simply looks like there was a delay (not a need to adjust any Settings).

      Thanks so much.

Does PixelPipe recompress/downsize the iPhone 3GS videos when uploading to MobileMe like the built in software does? The recompression really reduces the quality of the video to my eye.

We transfer the original media and allow a max size of 200MB per video directly from the phone So no, we don’t recompress or downsize the video coming off of the iPhone 3GS.

I answered my own question, no, Pixelpipe does not recompress the video, consequently it looks much nicer when uploaded to MobileMe via PixelPipe than when using the built in client on the iPhone 3GS! Hooray!

One issue though is that the files all seem to show up in the MobileMe gallery as “New Movie” no matter what title, caption, or keywords you give them in the iPhone app.

The naming was a limitation of the MobileMe API when we were integrating. We’ll have a look and see if we have more control over the file naming now.

Motionbox support would be really cool to have in the future…

I’ve uploaded a video and tried to route it to dropio, but it does not deliver it. Images get there, but not videos.

    • pixelbrett // June 27, 2009 at 7:11 am | Reply

Our first integration with drop.io was using email as the transport which is fine however has about a 10MB file size limit. We’re now moving to an API integration which will allow for much larger files to be transferred, should be live later next week.

Can you confirm if your email solution (or upcoming API) will bypass the compression and upload the video at full resolution? Thanks.

Hey, i’ve a little problem with video sending from my iphone 3GS to facebook. It works and i can see the vidz on my profile but it’s not auto-rotate (even with the box checked in settings). So every video is 1/4 to left.
It’s ok if I watch the video on pixelpipe but with distortion.
    Are you aware ?

Just installed the app and set it up to broadcast my media to Friendster, Facebook and Smugmug on my 3GS. Tested it out and works great. Keep up the good work!

  • Drew // July 23, 2009 at 12:13 pm | Reply

Cannot publish my videos to smugmug. I have a power account, which supports video, but when I try to upload it says it can’t because it’s not a pro account. This should be fixed, otherwise I can’t upload any photos to smugmug.

Go to http://dahmartins.smugmug.com/gallery/8969710_gByBP#596123140_uBfJu to see that videos are allowed in power accounts as this is my account.

    Please help!

When will video uploads to MySpace be suported? I am using an iphone 3GS… Also Dailybooth support would be great!

We have a blog post describing the issue and what we’ve done to fix it here http://blog.pixelpipe.com/. We actually submitted the thumbnail fix to Apple on the same day that the 3GS was released so it could be coming into the store at anytime as version 1.4.2.
